“Makellos – A Short Wave of Happiness” Explores Longing and Second Chances in New German Comedy

The new German comedy “Makellos – A Short Wave of Happiness” (“Flawless – A Short Wave of Happiness”) premieres on March 11th on ORF 2, with streaming available 24 hours prior on ORF ON. The film, directed by Dirk Kummer and written by Uli Brée, stars Adele Neuhauser and Ulrich Noethen as a couple navigating a passionless marriage, and Manuel Rubey as a call boy who unexpectedly impacts Constanze’s life.

A Story of Connection and Desire

Constanze (Adele Neuhauser) and Anton (Ulrich Noethen) run a traditional Trachtengeschäft (traditional clothing store) in Munich. Their marriage lacks intimacy, leaving Constanze feeling unfulfilled. After a suggestion from her friend Karin (Caroline Frank), she considers engaging a call boy. However, a chance encounter with Ricardo (Manuel Rubey), also working in the escort service, leads to an affair that Constanze views as a search for connection.

Beyond the Surface

Neuhauser emphasizes that the film delves deeper than just the physical aspect of the relationship. “It’s not primarily about sex,” she explained. “It’s actually about what every human being longs for: a real relationship with each other.” Rubey’s character, Ricardo, is also more nuanced than initially perceived. He develops a genuine connection with Constanze, revealing vulnerability and insecurity beneath a superficial exterior.

Exploring Modern Relationships

The film challenges conventional relationship dynamics. “You’re used to seeing men with younger women,” Neuhauser notes. “Now it’s the other way around.” Constanze seeks fulfillment and validation, and the film portrays her right to do so. The core themes revolve around closeness, longing, and finding happiness in everyday moments.

Cast and Production Details

In addition to Neuhauser, Noethen, and Rubey, the film features performances by Caroline Frank, Jochen Busse, Michael A. Grimm, and Lisa Kreuzer. “Makellos – A Short Wave of Happiness” was filmed in Munich and the surrounding areas in March and April 2025. The production companies involved are Bavaria Fiction, ORF, and BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk).

Finding Happiness in the Everyday

Neuhauser believes the key to a successful relationship lies in shared experiences and laughter. Rubey offers a more pragmatic perspective: “Do nothing on Valentine’s Day and pay attention on all other days.” The film presents a lighthearted yet thought-provoking exploration of love, freedom, and the small joys that make life meaningful.
