Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Takes Flight on PlayStation VR2 in April

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is set to receive a significant update in April with the launch of PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) support, bringing a new level of immersion to console players. The free update, launching with Sim Update 5, will allow players to experience the expansive world of flight simulation in virtual reality.

A New Level of Immersion

Announced last year, the integration of PSVR2 support for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has been highly anticipated. According to Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, the team focused on redesigning cockpit interactions to be natural and intuitive with the PS VR2 Sense controllers. “Cockpit interactions in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 are complex,” Neumann explained in a PlayStation Blog post. “There are so many different instruments, knobs, and switches to interact with. Every interaction model had to be redesigned to fit the PS VR2 Sense controllers to action them in a natural and intuitive manner.”

Technical Challenges and Solutions

Developing VR support for the visually demanding flight simulator presented several technical hurdles. The team tackled challenges related to maintaining a smooth framerate, crucial for a comfortable VR experience. Key innovations included foveated rendering with Flexible Scaled Rasterization and a frame duplication technique. Foveated rendering focuses processing power on the area the user is directly looking at, while frame duplication involves the render thread iterating twice for each frame, updating the camera position in between. These techniques were essential in achieving the necessary framerate for PSVR2 support. The development team drew inspiration from the VR implementation in Gran Turismo 7, recognizing the parallels between placing a player inside a vehicle and creating a sense of presence.

Release Details

PSVR2 support for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be available as a free update alongside Sim Update 5 in April. Attendees at the recent FSWeekend keynote in Lelystad were the first outside the core development team to experience the new VR mode. MSFS Addons reports that the update will cover all aircraft and mission types within the game.

Beyond the technical achievements, the developers emphasize the enhanced sense of authenticity that VR brings to flight simulation. With up to 125 different aircraft to choose from, players can experience a wide range of flight dynamics and scenarios in a truly immersive environment.
