Florida and USTA Southern Split Divisions at Annual Team Challenge

Florida and USTA Southern split four age divisions at the Florida Southern Team Challenge, which ran from October 23 through October 25, ustaflorida.com reported. While early expectations favored the visiting Southern squad in the younger brackets, the home teams mounted a dominant response in the older divisions.

The head-to-head event divided competition across state lines. The 12s and 14s matches took place at the Champions Club Tennis Complex in Tennessee, while the 16s and 18s played at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach. Each squad featured 16 to 17 players, typically eight boys and eight girls per division, spanning more than 90 matches in each age group covering singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Southern Controls Younger Brackets in Tennessee

Southern established a firm grip on the tournament during the opening days in Tennessee. In the 12s division, Southern won more than two-thirds of the matches to secure a 67-29 victory over Florida. The 12s roster for Florida included Clara Barnhart of Orlando, Bobby Bryan of Sunny Isles Beach, and Anastasia Denisova of Boca Raton.

The 14s division followed a nearly identical trajectory. Southern built a decisive lead to close out the bracket with a 64-32 win. Although Florida doubled its total points compared to the 12s division, the deep Southern lineup proved too difficult to overcome.

Florida Counterpunches in Daytona Beach

Florida shifted the momentum upon returning home to Daytona Beach for the 16s and 18s divisions. The 16s squad delivered the most dominant performance of the entire challenge, capturing 69 of the 96 matches contested to defeat Southern 69-27. That tally marked the largest margin of victory recorded by either side across all four age groups.

The 18s division provided the tightest contest of the weekend. Southern pushed the home side harder than in any previous bracket, but Florida held firm down the stretch to secure a 55-40 victory and claim the final division title.

Tournament History and Format Structure

The event builds on a series of annual clashes between the two sections. According to background details from USTA, Southern previously defeated Florida 208-176 in 2023 and 211-124 in 2022. The competition utilizes a National Level 2 format where players play a singles and doubles match each day without coaching allowed during play.
