LOUPE Americas 2026 is introducing in-line folding carton technology to its event, bringing in-line flexo printing into the wider LOUPE universe and creating new avenues for label converters within the folding carton market.

How In-Line Folding Carton Production Works

The primary difference between in-line production and traditional sheet-fed offset is that finished, printed, and embellished folding carton pieces emerge in a single pass from a roll of cartonboard. These in-line processes typically feature web treatment, reverse-side printing, cold foil, UV flexo or offset printing, coating, and cast-and-cure lamination. Additional units can integrate silkscreen, extended driers for water-based flexo and gravure coatings, and digital print bars.

Following print and decoration, the folding carton is die-cut and creased during the same machine pass. Converters achieve this using either in-line rotary die stations—one for creasing and one for through-cutting—or an in-line flatbed die-cutting station. This specific UV flexo press was configured with cold foil and cast-and-cure lamination.

Semi-rotary flatbed setups utilize inexpensive tooling identical to offline cut-crease machines, making them suitable for shorter runs. However, press speed remains slower than fully rotary cut-crease systems, meaning final configurations depend on expected production demands. Individual die-cut blanks exit onto a shingling conveyor featuring automatic waste removal, with optional fully automated packing available for direct customer shipments.

Sheet-Fed Offset Versus In-Line Production

Traditional sheet-fed folding carton production currently dominates global packaging volume. Sheet-fed conversion requires separate production steps encompassing printing, die-cutting, creasing, foiling, and embossing, which generates significant work-in-progress inventory, demands high labor, and extends lead times for each additional process.

By shifting to in-line presses, label converters can deliver more agile services by combining printing and finishing into a single pass. Steve Haedrich, President of New York Labels + Box Works and LOUPE Americas 2026 Folding Carton Ambassador, highlighted the operational capabilities of the technology. According to Haedrich, the growth in product launches, seasonal packaging, limited editions, and SKU proliferation drives demand for short-run and flexible folding carton solutions. Customers want to test products and enter new markets without committing to massive quantities, and current in-line technology allows printers to execute six steps simultaneously—rolling to the press, back printing, front printing, foil stamping, film laminating, embossing, and die-cutting all at once.

Target Niches for Label Converters

Entering the folding carton market requires strategic positioning rather than direct competition on price. Furthermore, narrow and mid-web in-line press widths constrain the economical format sizes a converter can offer.

Consequently, market entry points exist in short-run, fast-turnaround, multiple-SKU work involving smaller format folding cartons, or in longer runs of highly embellished small-format packaging. Moving forward, industry projections indicate that both flexo and hybrid machine platforms driven by inkjet technology, alongside flexo coating and modular decoration processes, will continue shaping single-pass folding carton manufacturing.
