Luck at the last second: An attempted fraud worth millions in Wedel was discovered just in time. A 53-year-old man and his 24-year-old accomplice are said to have tried to obtain a loan of 1.5 million euros from a financial institution. However, a bank employee noticed discrepancies shortly before the payout – and led the suspect on the wrong track.
According to the police, the suspected perpetrator, a Hamburg resident with Austrian citizenship, submitted the loan application on Friday last week (January 30). He had previously submitted all the necessary documents. However, during a final cross-check of a land register entry, the responsible bank employee noticed that something was wrong. He then took a closer look at the papers again – and, according to the police, recognized almost perfect forgeries.
The bank employee filed a report late in the afternoon. In coordination with the Pinneberg criminal police and the Wedel police, he personally lured the suspect to the bank branch on a pretext for the following Tuesday (February 3).

Attempted bank fraud: alleged perpetrators at large
When the 53-year-old appeared, he is said not to have come alone: there was a 24-year-old Austrian woman with him – she is suspected of being involved in the fraud. The bank staff identified both of them – then officers from the Wedel hotspot service temporarily arrested the two suspects and handed them over to the Pinneberg criminal police.
