David Vander Meer, a former Las Vegas youth pastor accused of murdering his wife in 2006, died in custody on June 29, 2023, from self-inflicted injuries, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office. Vander Meer, 49, had been held on first-degree murder and insurance fraud charges related to the death of his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer, whose body was found at the base of a cliff in Zion National Park in 2006.
Background of the Case
Vander Meer and Bernadette Vander Meer were hiking at Angels Landing in Zion National Park on June 30, 2006, to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Vander Meer told investigators he was setting up a camera to capture sunrise photographs when Bernadette fell to her death, according to court documents. Her death was initially ruled an accident, and Vander Meer later collected a $567,439 life insurance payout, authorities said.
The case was reopened in 2022 after a tip from Barry Diamond, a senior pastor at Legacy Christian Church, where Vander Meer had worked as a youth pastor. Diamond alleged Vander Meer had inappropriate relationships with minors, including a 14-year-old girl identified as SH, who claimed he groomed her with gifts and physical affection starting in 2002. Vander Meer allegedly told SH that “the only way they could be together was if Bernadette was not alive,” according to an affidavit.
Allegations and Legal Proceedings
Investigations revealed Vander Meer had taken out life insurance policies on both himself and Bernadette, with combined values exceeding $550,000 by March 2005. After Bernadette’s death, Vander Meer used the insurance money to buy a car for SH and another youth group member, as well as to purchase a house and fund trips, authorities said. In 2008, Vander Meer entered a private marriage agreement with SH to obtain health benefits, and they married publicly in 2010 before divorcing in 2014.

Vander Meer was arrested on June 16, 2023, after investigators linked him to the renewed inquiry. He was taken to a hospital for “self-sustained injuries” on June 28, 2023, and later pronounced dead. The coroner’s office has not yet released the official cause of death.
Community and Legal Reactions
The case has drawn attention to the long-term implications of unsolved crimes and the challenges of prosecuting decades-old allegations. Washington County Attorney’s Office spokespersons have not commented on the case’s specifics, but legal experts note that the use of new evidence and tips can lead to reopenings of cold cases. Vander Meer’s death leaves unresolved questions about the circumstances of Bernadette Vander Meer’s death and the full extent of his alleged misconduct.
Authorities continue to investigate whether other individuals may have been involved in the events surrounding Bernadette Vander Meer’s death. The case highlights the complexities of criminal justice in cases where evidence resurfaces years after an incident.
