Fortnite Returns to Google Play Store After Legal Battle
After a years-long legal dispute, Fortnite is once again available for download on the Google Play Store. The return follows a settlement between Epic Games and Google, resolving a lawsuit centered around Google’s Play Billing policies. The game is now accessible on Android devices worldwide.
The Legal Dispute and Settlement
Since 2020, Fortnite was removed from the Google Play Store due to a conflict over Google’s commission on in-app purchases. Epic Games challenged Google’s requirement that app developers use Google Play Billing, arguing it imposed unfair fees. The core of the dispute revolved around Google’s refusal to allow apps to accept payment without going through Google Play Billing .
In late 2025, the two companies signaled they had reached terms for a settlement. Epic Games announced that it will “be investing robustly in serving developers and gamers with the Epic Games Store for Android, and will also be bringing Fortnite back to the Google Play Store worldwide.” Both Epic and Google jointly requested the US District Court to accept their proposal to end the lawsuit.
Changes to Google Play Billing
A key component of the settlement involves changes to Google’s billing policies. Google has announced it will now allow third-party billing on its platforms, though the rollout will occur in stages. This change addresses one of Epic Games’ primary concerns and opens the door for more flexible payment options within Android apps.
