The origins of Frankfort trace back to 1829 when brothers John, William, and Nicholas Pence settled the land. They acquired the land from the government in 1827 and 1828 and, in 1830, generously donated 60 acres to the county commissioners. This pivotal donation led to the establishment of the county seat in Frankfort, rather than in the competing community of Jefferson. The town was named Frankfort in honor of the brothers’ German ancestors’ home in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
William Douglass, the county agent, laid out the original town plat on the donated land, which was officially filed on June 8, 1830.
