Free Dementia Caregiver Training Available in Letterkenny

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is offering a free training day in Letterkenny on March 2, 2026, designed to support individuals caring for family members or friends living with dementia. The session will be held at the Safetech building from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Understanding Dementia and the Caregiver’s Role

This workshop aims to provide caregivers with a comprehensive understanding of the different types and stages of dementia, with a particular emphasis on the lived experience of those affected. Rather than solely focusing on clinical details, the training will help families understand the emotional and psychological impact of dementia on their loved ones.

Practical Communication Strategies

A key component of the training will be focused on communication techniques. Attendees will learn practical strategies to maintain meaningful connections and adapt their communication styles to better support individuals with dementia. This includes learning how to navigate the challenges of communication as the condition progresses.

Expert-Led Training

The event will be led by Gerry Farrell, a specialist with over 40 years of experience in mental health and dementia care. Farrell has a strong background working with the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin, and is known for his compassionate, person-centered approach to family dynamics.

Registration Information

While the training is free, registration is required due to limited space. To reserve a spot or request additional information, contact Diane Donnelly at 087 2770103.

Letterkenny Community Healthcare Facility Update

This training is taking place as Letterkenny prepares for the opening of a new 110-bed Community Healthcare Facility on Kilmacrennan Road. Construction is on track for completion in 2026, with the facility expected to be operational in early 2027 [1]. The new facility will include a 10-bed Dementia Unit designed to provide a person-centered and safe environment for individuals living with dementia and their families [1], [2]. The project is expected to cost over €52 million [2].

The new healthcare facility represents a significant investment in the care of older people in Letterkenny and the wider county of Donegal, providing modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for both short and long-term care [3].
