Luas Contract Shifts as Transdev Loses Bid After 22 Years

After two decades operating Dublin’s Luas tram service, Transdev has lost the €1.75 billion contract to a joint venture between Amey and Keolis. The decision, announced on February 26, 2026, marks a significant change for the Irish light rail network.

Contract Details and Transition

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) initiated the search for a new operator in 2023. The new contract, valued at €1.75 billion, will commence in mid-2026 and run for an initial seven years, with potential renewal options extending up to five to seven additional years .

Transdev’s Response

Transdev expressed disappointment with the outcome, communicating the news to staff as “very disappointing.” The company stated it would carefully consider the decision and assess its position during a 14-day mandatory standstill period, as per public procurement rules .

Amey and Keolis Capture the Reins

The winning bid comes from a British and French joint venture between Amey and Keolis. The pair currently operate the Docklands Light Railway in London, having done so since 2014 .
