Wheeling too commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Community Events
WHEELING, W.Va. – The city of Wheeling is preparing to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of public events leading up to and including Martin Luther King Jr. Day. These events aim to reflect on Dr. king’s enduring impact and encourage continued progress toward his vision of equality and justice.
The commemoration begins on Friday with a Shabbat service at Temple Shalom at 7 p.m. On Saturday, West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) will host a panel discussion titled “An American Vision or an American Division” at 2 p.m., exploring the complexities of Dr. King’s message in contemporary society. Later that evening, the YWCA will present the 5th Annual Ohio Valley Festival for Filmmakers of Color, also at WVNCC.
The centerpiece of the celebration will be a march on Sunday, commencing at 2:15 p.m. Participants will gather at the Windmill and proceed to WVNCC. A shuttle service will be available from the college to the Windmill for those who wish to join the march along the route.
Ron Scott Jr., director of cultural diversity and community outreach at the Wheeling YWCA, emphasized the importance of remembering the struggles that lead to the establishment of the holiday. “It’s a legacy we should never let die,” Scott stated. “We must remember the dreams and ideas Dr. King fought for and ensure that movement continues to fruition.”
