Power Restored to Thousands in Friesland After Cable Failure

Workum, Friesland – A widespread power outage affecting approximately 3,700 households in the southwest of Friesland, Netherlands, has been resolved, with full restoration expected before midnight on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The outage, which began around 2:30 PM on February 23, 2026, was caused by a broken cable connecting a high-voltage pylon to a transformer near Workum, according to grid operator Liander.

Impacted Areas

The power cut impacted residents in several towns, including Workum, Blauwhuis and Koudum. Two transformers were initially knocked offline due to the cable failure as reported by NOS.

Restoration Efforts

Liander crews worked to repair the damaged cable. Once the repair was complete, the transformer was brought back online in phases to avoid further disruptions. As of 10:39 PM on February 23, 2026, approximately 800 households had already regained power according to Omrop Fryslân. Liander anticipated full restoration for all affected customers by midnight.

Cause of the Outage

The cause of the initial cable failure remains under investigation. Liander has not yet determined what led to the damage.
