Two Men Arrested After Violent Outburst on Flight

Two airline passengers face federal charges after a flight erupted into chaos involving physical assaults, spitting, and threats against crew members, according to court documents filed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The mid-air disturbance forced the flight to alter its course, resulting in immediate arrests upon landing.

Flight Diversion Triggered by Disruptive Behavior

According to an affidavit filed in the United States District Court, the incident occurred aboard a commercial flight traveling on February 12. Passengers Joden Eaton and Jered Rael became increasingly belligerent after flight attendants refused to serve them additional alcohol. Witnesses reported that the men began shouting obscenities, pacing the aisles, and ignoring crew instructions to return to their seats.

The situation escalated rapidly when the men physical confronted the flight crew. According to the FBI complaint, Rael allegedly kicked and spat at a flight attendant, while Eaton threatened to physically harm members of the flight deck crew. “We are going to take this plane down,” Eaton shouted, according to statements from multiple witnesses recorded in the federal charging documents.

Intervention and Federal Charges

Several passengers intervened to help restrain the two men for the remainder of the journey. The flight captain diverted the aircraft to the nearest major airport, where local law enforcement and federal agents met the plane upon arrival at the gate.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eaton and Rael each face one count of interfering with flight crew members and attendants, a felony offense under federal aviation law. If convicted, both men face up to 20 years in federal prison. U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert S. Ballou ordered both defendants held pending a preliminary detention hearing.

Aviation Security Context

The Federal Aviation Administration maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward unruly behavior aboard commercial aircraft. Under federal law, interfering with crew members carries severe civil penalties alongside potential criminal prosecution. The incident adds to a broader pattern of disruptive passenger behavior tracked by federal regulators over recent years.

Aviation security experts note that carriers have increasingly relied on federal prosecution rather than simple bans or warnings to deter in-flight disturbances. The case remains under active investigation by the FBI and the Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General.
