The Impact of Nigeria’s Food Inflation
Precious’s financial difficulties coincided with a severe economic downturn for households and food businesses across Nigeria between 2023 and 2024. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that food prices in December 2024 averaged nearly 40 percent higher than the previous year, with an annual food inflation rate of 39.12 percent recorded for the 12-month period ending in December 2024.
As operating costs escalated and profit margins vanished, the food business generated consistent losses rather than income. By 2025, as food inflation began to ease, Precious abandoned the food enterprise to seek alternative employment that did not require upfront capital and inventory risks.
Transition to Easybuy Sales Talent
In her current role as a sales talent with Easybuy, Precious markets smartphone installment payment plans to prospective customers in public spaces. Unlike her food business, where she purchased ingredients and absorbed financial losses when meals went unsold, her current work requires no inventory purchases.
Sales talents earn commissions based on successful customer device purchases rather than managing physical stock.
Precious noted that customer feedback regarding the smartphone devices has remained positive, with buyers reporting no performance issues. She stated that her earnings have improved significantly compared to her previous venture, allowing her to set personal financial milestones for the future.
