Fuel Prices in Bulgaria Rise Amidst Middle East Tensions

Bulgaria is experiencing an increase in fuel prices, with gasoline and diesel seeing rises of between 5 and 9 cents per liter at the complete of last week, confirmed by Finance Minister Georgi Klisurski. The most popular gasoline, A95, now costs between 1.32 and 1.36 euros per liter, while diesel ranges from 1.39 to 1.47 euros per liter. Gas prices have as well increased, from 0.58 to 0.62 euros per liter.

Recent Price Increases

These price hikes represent a significant jump from just a week prior, when A95 averaged 1.26 euros and diesel cost 1.29 euros per liter. Some gas stations are reporting even larger increases, with certain fuel types rising by nearly 20 cents per liter, according to reports from consumers on social media.

International Factors and Government Response

The increase in oil prices on the international market is attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Bulgarian government has stated the need to assure citizens of sufficient fuel supplies and that fuel purchased at lower prices is currently being sold. Still, the market reacted immediately with upward price adjustments.

Inspections for Speculative Pricing

The state announced it would conduct inspections at gas stations to investigate potential speculative pricing, but the results of these inspections have not yet been released as of today, March 9, 2026.

Georgi Klisurski’s Background

Georgi Markov Klisurski has served as Bulgaria’s Minister of Finance since February 19, 2026, in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrey Gurov. Prior to this role, he was a Deputy Minister of Finance in the government of Nikolai Denkov, serving from June 8, 2023, to April 9, 2024, where he was responsible for the state budget, state debt, and municipal finances. He also served as an advisor to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Asen Vasilev and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of “Bulgaria Heli Med Service” EAD from August 2022 to March 2023. Klisurski holds an MBA from Wharton School and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard Kennedy School and previously studied at the American College of Sofia. He resigned from the “The Change” party on June 26, 2025, citing disappointment and disillusionment.
