Times of San Diego Wins 18 Awards at Press Club Excellence in Journalism Event

Times of San Diego won 18 awards at the San Diego Press Club’s 53rd Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards, securing six first-place finishes across 13 different categories. timesofsandiego.com reported that the newsroom earned second place in the News Site category, which judges designated as the top distinction in that division for the year.

“San Diego is lucky to have sophisticated watchdogs covering the community and providing an easily navigable website, chock-full of valuable news and information, in two languages,” a judge wrote of the news site placement.

Criminal Justice and Breaking News Recognition

In criminal justice reporting, Times of San Diego swept the category by capturing first, second, and third place. Lillian Perlmuter secured the top award for her story titled “What happens when ICE arrests US citizens.”

The publication also claimed second place in the Breaking News category for its coverage of the attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego. A judge commended the reporting as “very comprehensive, with the 3 main stories, with 2 of them available in Spanish,” adding that “the ticktock was undoubtedly compelling and helpful to try to make sense of a senseless tragedy.”

Additional Category Wins Across the Newsroom

Beyond criminal justice and breaking news, the San Diego Press Club recognized the outlet in 10 other areas of coverage. Those additional awards span series reporting, architecture and design, education, editorials, food reporting, history, military coverage, sports, profiles, and light columns.
