According to the Nikkei Industry Map 2027 report published by Japan’s largest financial media outlet, Fujifilm has climbed into third place among digital camera manufacturers, unseating Nikon for the first time on the strength of viral demand for its retro-inspired cameras. Canon continues to lead the market with nearly half of all shipments, followed by Sony in second place.

The annual report from Nikkei tracks unit shipments from Japanese camera manufacturers for fiscal year 2025, providing a clear snapshot of shifting consumer preferences across the industry. Overall, the market expanded to 9.5 million shipped cameras, recovering from lower volumes in preceding years, according to data highlighted by Digital Camera World.
Canon retained its dominant position by shipping 4.5 million cameras, commanding a 45.7% market share after adding nearly a million units compared to the previous year’s figures. Sony secured the second-place spot for the seventh year, driven by steady demand for its Alpha mirrorless lineup with 2.42 million units shipped. Fujifilm captured third place by shipping 1.16 million cameras, marking a steep climb from 740,000 units the prior year and 430,000 units in 2023.
The Drivers Behind Fujifilm’s Rise
Fujifilm’s rapid ascent past Nikon stems largely from viral acclaim surrounding its retro-styled cameras and proprietary color science. Models like the X100VI generated intense online demand, keeping the compact camera on extensive waitlists and pulling up consumer interest in sibling bodies such as the X-E5, X-M5, and X-T30 III, as detailed by Digital Camera World.
Nikon slipped to fourth place with 880,000 camera shipments, down from 960,000 previously. While Nikon’s sales dipped slightly, industry analysis notes that Fujifilm’s aggressive surge past the one-million-unit mark was the decisive factor in the reshuffled top three.
Broader Industry Shifts and Manufacturer Performance
Further down the rankings, Panasonic maintained its fifth-place position while experiencing significant growth, jumping from 280,000 units to 430,000 shipped cameras. Ricoh advanced to sixth place ahead of OM System after its camera shipments tripled over the preceding year, a surge attributed by Digital Camera World to strong reception of the Ricoh GR IV series. OM System rounded out the tracked Japanese manufacturers in seventh place with 150,000 shipments.
