Fulton County to Vote on $900 Million Hospital in South Fulton
Fulton County leaders are poised to vote on a proposal to construct a new, full-service hospital in south Fulton County, addressing long-standing healthcare access issues in what has been described as a medical desert. The project, estimated to cost $900 million, is a collaborative effort between Fulton County, Grady Health System, and the Grady Foundation.
Addressing a Critical Healthcare Gap
Residents in south Fulton County have faced limited access to emergency care since the closures of Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center and its East Point hospital, leaving thousands without a nearby emergency room. Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts emphasized the need for improved healthcare access, stating, “People in South Fulton need and deserve a hospital.” 11Alive reports that a study by Ernst & Young confirmed the region’s need for a hospital, citing instances where it was faster to reach Macon than downtown Atlanta for emergency services.
Funding and Project Phases
The proposed hospital will be funded through a three-way cost split. Fulton County is expected to contribute $300 million through bonds, while the Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority and Grady Health System will each contribute $300 million. Atlanta News First details that the hospital is planned for Union City and is intended to alleviate pressure on Grady Memorial Hospital, currently Atlanta’s sole Level 1 trauma center.
County leaders describe the hospital as the final phase of a three-part plan to restore healthcare access. The first phase involved establishing a freestanding medical clinic, and the second phase included a medical office complex.
Commission Vote and Next Steps
The Fulton County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to vote on the resolution authorizing the hospital’s construction on Wednesday. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the commission will consider a resolution to initiate the construction process. It remains unclear whether the new hospital will be designated as a Level 1 trauma center.
Grady Health System is planning to open a 20,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department in South Fulton County by fall 2026, further enhancing access to emergency medical services in the area. Fox 5 Atlanta
