The Evolving Newsroom: WAN-IFRA and FT Strategies Launch Study on AI and Future News Strategies

The world’s most successful news organizations are defined by their commitment to adapting to evolving audience expectations, according to WAN-IFRA CEO Stig Ørskov. As the media landscape undergoes rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence, a new collaborative study aims to provide a benchmark for newsroom evolution and strategic adaptation.

WAN-IFRA, in partnership with FT Strategies and Arc XP, has launched the Future Newsroom Study to examine how newsrooms are responding to profound structural changes. The study will deliver an evidence-based picture of how editorial leaders are preparing their organizations for the future, focusing on key areas of adaptation and innovation.

Key Areas of Investigation

  • How newsroom strategy is defined and executed
  • The integration of AI and automation into editorial workflows
  • Evolution of organizational structures to meet audience needs
  • Shifts in editorial investment priorities
  • The skills and capabilities crucial for successful newsrooms

“In today’s AI-driven era, where editorial tools, audience needs, and the competitive landscape are changing at unprecedented speed, how do editorial leaders shape newsrooms to deliver distinctive, relevant journalism?” Ørskov stated.

A Global Benchmark for Newsroom Transformation

The research will draw upon a rich repository of interviews with leading editorial thinkers and will be supported by a comprehensive survey. Lisa MacLeod, Director and Head of News at FT Strategies, emphasized the study’s goal to create a “recurring global benchmark that helps newsroom leaders evolve operationally.”

The findings will be presented in a co-branded report, launched at WAN-IFRA’s 77th World News Media Congress in Marseille in June. The study aims to provide practical frameworks and benchmarks to support newsroom leaders navigating this period of significant change.

WAN-IFRA’s Commitment to AI Innovation

This initiative builds upon WAN-IFRA’s previous work in exploring the potential of AI in newsrooms. Two years ago, the organization launched the Newsroom AI Catalyst, which saw over 140 newsrooms worldwide experiment with AI-driven solutions. The new AI Futures Lab, a partnership with OpenAI, will further this effort by helping 24 media organizations in Asia-Pacific and Latin America scale promising AI prototypes into sustainable products.

“AI is already reshaping our industry,” Ørskov noted. “The real opportunity now is turning experimentation into sustainable products that strengthen journalism and deepen audience relationships, creating sustainable revenues to support high-quality journalism.”

Participation in the Future Newsroom Study is open through a survey available here. Responses will be kept confidential.
