Garmin Reopens Connect API Developer Program With Three New Tiers

After closing to new applicants for seven months, Garmin has reopened and revamped its Garmin Connect API developer program with a new three-tiered structure, DC Rainmaker reported. The platform initially suspended new applications in March due to an overwhelming surge of daily inbound requests driven largely by AI-generated apps.

The previous review process treated every application with enterprise-level scrutiny, creating a massive backlog. Under the updated system, developers can access personal, startup, or enterprise levels depending on their scale and use case.

Personal and Startup Tiers Offer Free Developer Access

The Personal tier is designed for single users accessing their own health and activity data, with approvals taking only seconds. The Startup tier accommodates organizations supporting up to 1,000 users, adding Courses and Training APIs to push routes and structured workouts to devices.

Both the Personal and Startup tiers are entirely free. They grant developers JSON summaries, general health data, women’s health data JSON summaries, and full .FIT activity data files, though some proprietary data fields are reportedly stripped out compared to manual device uploads.

Enterprise Tier Introduces Paid User-Based Billing

Operations exceeding 1,000 users fall under the Enterprise tier, which includes technical support, historical data backfill capabilities, and the Golf API. Existing partners automatically transition to Enterprise or Starter memberships based on user counts and are exempt from an initial $1,000 entry fee.

New enterprise applicants face an initial $1,000 entry fee that acts as a credit toward monthly active user billing. Ongoing fees are calculated on a per-user basis for monthly active connections and negotiated individually per company, with a deadline of April 1, 2027, to finalize financial details.
