Gary Sánchez Signs One-Year Deal with Brewers

The Brewers have added depth at catcher by agreeing to a one-year, $1.75 million deal with Dominican Gary Sánchez, according to a report by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. The club has not confirmed the agreement.

Sánchez, who is a veteran of 11 seasons in the Majors, played with the Orioles in 2025, but was limited to just 29 games. He spent most of last season on the disabled list, first due to right wrist inflammation (June 28-14) and then a sprained right knee from Aug. 22 until the end of the season.

The Orioles were the Dominican’s fifth team since his departure from the Yankees, a team he played for seven seasons after being signed as an international free agent at age 16 in July 2009. After being sent to the Twins in March 2022, Sánchez also saw action with the Mets, Padres and Brewers, plus a brief stay in the Minor Leagues with the Giants organization in 2023.

Although he has yet to establish himself since leaving the Bronx, Sánchez has had some success in the last four seasons, excelling down the stretch with San Diego in 2023, when he hit 19 home runs in 72 games. He showed signs that he is still capable of maintaining that level briefly between injuries during 2025, when he hit .354 with four homers and 18 RBIs in a 13-game stretch in June.

Assuming he continues as a substitute cover, Sánchez emerges as an intriguing substitute. The Dominican — who has been called to two All-Star Games (2017 and 2019) with a Silver Slugger and two seasons with at least 30 home runs — finished second in voting for American League Rookie of the Year in 2016 after hitting 20 homers and recording an OPS of 1.032 in 53 games.

Although he hasn’t shown that same kind of production with consistency since 2019, Sánchez has continued to post high hit rates, sometimes resulting in unexpected power numbers with the clubs that have given him a chance.

In his career of 859 Major League games, Sánchez has an offensive line of .224/.309/.461 (OPS of .770) with 189 home runs and 509 RBIs.
