Hugo Petit and Joey Therrien-Rivers Sexual Assault Trial Begins in Gatineau

The trial of Hugo Petit and Joey Therrien-Rivers commenced on Monday, February 16, 2026, at the Gatineau courthouse. The two men face charges of sexual assault with the participation of another person.

Background of the Case

Both men, in their thirties, were initially accused in late 2023 following alleged incidents that occurred during the summer of the same year. The identity of the alleged victim(s) is protected by a publication ban.

The investigation led to additional charges. A second count of sexual assault with the participation of another person was added, relating to a second alleged victim. Joey Therrien-Rivers also faces a third charge of sexual assault concerning the second complainant.

The Accused

Joey Therrien-Rivers, formerly the co-owner of the restaurants Le Foubrac, Le Sans Façon, and Le Meech & Munch, sold these businesses prior to the trial. His defense is being led by Amélie Charlebois of the law firm Charlebois Swanston Gagnon (CSG).

Hugo Petit, a former lawyer registered with the Quebec Bar, is no longer affiliated with Robinson Business Law. He has a temporary limitation on his professional activities, preventing him from practicing law in areas other than business law and prohibiting contact with the co-defendant except in the presence of counsel. Prior to his legal career, Petit played junior hockey and attended Buffalo State College in the NCAA Division III.

Legal Representation and Court Proceedings

Michel Swanston, a founding partner of Charlebois Swanston Gagnon, represents Hugo Petit. The prosecution is being handled by Jennifer Morin and Maria Eid of the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP). The trial is presided over by Judge Mark Philippe.

The trial is scheduled to continue until February 27, 2026. Ten days have been allocated for the proceedings.
