Florida Gators Quarterback Battle: Philo and Jones Jr. Compete for Starting Role

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators are deep into a quarterback competition between Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and returning redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr., with Head Coach Jon Sumrall emphasizing a fluid depth chart and a 50/50 split in reps during spring practice. The battle to determine the Week 1 starter is ongoing, and Sumrall has made it clear that the starting job isn’t guaranteed beyond the first game.

A Healthy Competition

Sumrall has been pleased with the dynamic between Philo and Jones Jr., noting their supportive and challenging approach to improving each other’s game. “They are doing well is supporting each other. They’re challenging each other, but they’re doing it in a healthy competitive way,” Sumrall said. “I advise them all the time, you don’t elevate by pushing someone else down.”

Aaron Philo: Experience and System Familiarity

Aaron Philo brings experience to the table, having played in 8 games, including 1 start, for Georgia Tech, where he threw for 938 yards. He likewise has a pre-existing relationship with Florida’s offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner, who recruited him to Georgia Tech. “He was really the first person that I felt like kind of believed in me out of high school,” Philo said of Faulkner. Philo’s familiarity with a similar offensive system could give him an early advantage.

Despite his new surroundings, Philo hasn’t lost sight of his competitive spirit, openly expressing his dislike for the Georgia Bulldogs. “I dislike Georgia a lot,” Philo stated, adding his desire to defeat them.

Tramell Jones Jr.: Comfort and Confidence

Tramell Jones Jr. Is entering his second year with the Gators, providing him with a deeper understanding of the program, his teammates, and the overall environment. Jones appeared in 2 games last season, completing 21 of 35 passes for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns. He is reportedly much healthier this spring compared to his freshman season. “Last year I came in, I wasn’t healthy, didn’t have a healthy spring,” Jones said. “So I realize this spring is the first year I’m able to be 100 percent and be back on my feet.”

Sumrall has praised Jones’s poise and confidence, describing him as having a “quiet confidence” and being “straightforward to relate to.”

The Running Element and Future Outlook

Sumrall highlighted the ability of both quarterbacks to run as a key asset in Faulkner’s system, opening up opportunities for both passing and rushing plays. He also noted that the starting quarterback for the season opener is not necessarily guaranteed to remain the starter throughout the season, emphasizing the importance of consistent performance, and leadership.

Freshman Contender

Freshman Will Griffin has also impressed the coaching staff with his physical tools and potential, though he is not currently considered a frontrunner for the starting position.

A Continuous Competition

The quarterback competition is expected to continue throughout the season, with Sumrall drawing on his experience at Tulane, where he didn’t name a starting quarterback until the day of the season opener. The Gators will continue to evaluate both Philo and Jones Jr. Based on their performance, leadership, and execution.
