Green Gate Shopping Centre Sets April 2027 Opening in Pretoria East

The 15,000-square-metre Green Gate Shopping Centre in Pretoria East is scheduled to open in April 2027, anchored by retailers including Checkers, Woolworths, and Dis-Chem Pharmacies, Daily Investor reported. Situated along Garsfontein Road, the development features 737 vehicle bays, 20 motorcycle bays, and 35 surplus bays to handle shopper traffic.

Construction on the retail facility began in February 2026. The Moolman Group is developing the project, which forms part of the broader Dorpstraat Capital Growth Fund portfolio and will house 47 retail outlets in total. Dorpstraat stated that the tenant mix is curated to offer a diverse range of services, from essential daily needs stores to national fashion brands.

Anchor Retailers and Central Piazza Layout

Woolworths maintains a substantial footprint within the new complex, operating a Woolworths Food, Woolworths Cellar, Woolworths Edit, and a Woolworths Café. Additional confirmed national tenants include Pick n Pay Clothing, Uniq, Pep Home, Petshop Science, Ackermans, Cape Union Mart, The Crazy Store, and Sportsman’s Warehouse.

The Moolman Group designed a family-friendly central piazza as the focal point of the property, incorporating outdoor dining and leisure space. Confirmed restaurants surrounding the piazza include Panarottis, Doppio Zero, Shop 59 Café, KFC, and Kauai. Specialty stores such as Continental Linen, Lux Haven, Spec-Savers, Gary Rom, PNA, Fixlab, and Senqu round out the commercial offerings.

Integration Within the R84 Billion Mooikloof Smart City

The retail development anchors a commercial corner of the R84 billion Mooikloof Smart City, a public-private partnership between Balwin Properties and the government. First announced in 2020 as one of the government’s Strategic Integrated Projects, the smart city initiative targets lower-to-middle-income households with affordable sectional-title units and lifestyle estate amenities.

Balwin Properties is developing over 14,000 residential units across the site, aimed at first-time buyers such as young professionals, teachers, nurses, and police officers who exceed income limits for RDP housing. The residential precincts incorporate energy-efficient appliances, water-saving equipment, and insulation to meet environmental standards.

On-Site Lifestyle and Educational Facilities

Residents have access to biometric security alongside recreational infrastructure including padel courts, soccer fields, a gym, running tracks, and a dedicated training center. Education serves as a core pillar of the master plan, with facilities spanning early childhood learning and private institutions.

Construction operates through phased rollouts across the development. Early residential precincts like Greenkloof are already occupied, with ongoing unit handovers matching the schedule for the broader smart city expansion.
