Genève-Servette HC and HC Lugano have finalized a swap deal involving goaltenders Robert Mayer and Joren van Pottelberghe, both signed on loan until the end of the 2026-2027 season. The agreement follows Mayer’s request for a team change to secure more ice time, a move confirmed by the club’s official announcement.
Robert Mayer departs for Lugano
After eleven seasons and 348 appearances with the "Grenats," Robert Mayer will continue his career in Ticino. The goaltender was a key figure in the club’s history, notably serving as a primary contributor to the 2023 Swiss championship title. During those playoffs, Mayer recorded a 93.4% save percentage and a 1.67 goals-against average.
Marc Gautschi stated that the club granted Mayer’s request because he "deserved a new chance to secure a number 1 position," noting that their collaboration was not slated to continue beyond the current season. As part of the transition, the club will hold a tribute ceremony for Mayer on October 20, when Lugano visits the Vernets arena.
Joren van Pottelberghe joins Genève-Servette
Joren van Pottelberghe joins the Geneva roster on loan through the 2026-2027 season to partner with Stéphane Charlin. The 29-year-old international goaltender, who was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 2015, brings extensive National League experience from his previous tenures with Davos, Bienne, and Lugano.
"With Joren, we welcome a goaltender in the prime of his career who still has potential to exploit," Gautschi said. The club emphasized that Van Pottelberghe was among the league’s top-performing goaltenders statistically during the previous season.
