George Lucas’s Star Wars Museum to Open in Los Angeles This September

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, will open to the public in Los Angeles on September 22, according to exhibition curator Ryan Linkof. Designed with a distinct spacecraft-like architectural style, the institution will house more than 1 300 objects amassed by the American director over decades across 33 galleries spanning more than 9 200 meters carrés.

Exhibits and Rare Archives Coming to Los Angeles

The museum’s catalog features works by painters such as Norman Rockwell, Jessie Willcox Smith, N.C. Colescott, alongside cartoonists Winsor McCay, Jack Kirby, and Frank Frazetta. According to Ryan Linkof during an interview at the San Diego Comic-Con, the institution holds exceptional pieces from Frazetta’s collection that visitors cannot see anywhere else. For many enthusiasts, the core attraction will be the production documents originating directly from Lucasfilm archives.

Linkof stated that the institution houses the Lucas Archives, which will enable a dedicated Star Wars exhibition featuring exceptional pieces that have never been displayed previously. According to the curator, these rare production documents and artworks rarely find a place in traditional fine art institutions, positioning the museum as a unique repository for pop culture history.

George Lucas and the Museum’s Long-Term Vision

At 82 years old, George Lucas participates actively in the development of the project, which Linkof describes as an ultimate professional and creative culmination for the filmmaker. According to Mellody Hobson, the filmmaker’s two defining major legacies are the Star Wars franchise and this new museum. Last year, George Lucas made his first appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con pop culture convention specifically to promote the upcoming institution.
