Georges Benjamin: Leading Public Health Through Challenging Times
In 2002, Georges C. Benjamin accepted the position of Executive Director of the American Public Health association (APHA), initially expecting a short-term commitment. “I thought it would be two years, at most,” Benjamin recalls. He is now beginning his 24th year at the helm, a testament to his dedication and the critical role he plays in shaping public health policy.
Benjamin’s tenure has coincided with a period of significant political and public health challenges in the United States. From navigating responses to outbreaks like H1N1, Ebola, and most recently, COVID-19, to advocating for policies addressing chronic diseases and health equity, he has consistently been a voice for evidence-based public health practices. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding the APHA’s advocacy efforts on issues ranging from funding for public health programs to access to healthcare.

The organization represents a broad range of health professionals and works to improve the health of all people and communities. prior to his role at the APHA, Benjamin served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and as Deputy Secretary for Public Health.He is a physician and has held positions at various hospitals and health organizations. His background in both clinical medicine and public health management provides him with a unique perspective on the challenges facing the healthcare system.
