Gerard Joling addresses René Froger health and 2027 concerts

Dutch singer Gerard Joling expects the concert series De Toppers to return in 2027 despite his colleague René Froger stepping back due to an autoimmune disease, Shownieuws reported. Froger announced in September that he was diagnosed with myositis, forcing him to reduce his workload.

Speaking with Daniel Dekker on NPO Radio 5, Joling addressed the diagnosis directly. “That I find very sad,” Joling said. “You wouldn’t wish that on your worst enemy, but outside of that, he is a good friend and colleague.” Joling credited Froger with building the group’s massive platform and called him a wonderful person to work with, wishing him well and a speedy recovery.

Uncertainty Surrounding Upcoming Concert Roles

While Joling expressed confidence that De Toppers will continue through 2027, the exact format of the upcoming shows remains unconfirmed. Radio host Daniel Dekker noted that an edition of De Toppers without Froger would feel strange, a sentiment Joling shared.

Joling suggested that a modified participation format could work for the group. “That would be weird, but I also think that his role can be a little smaller and that he will just be there again,” Joling said. At the same time, the singer emphasized that rest remains the top priority for his longtime colleague.
