Glasgow Central Station Disruption Continues Following Fire

Disruption to train services at Glasgow Central Station continues for a fourth day following a major fire that broke out on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at a neighboring building on Union Street. While low-level services have resumed, the high-level station remains closed this week as safety assessments are ongoing.

Fire and Structural Damage

The fire, which began at approximately 3:46 PM on Sunday, rapidly spread through a four-story commercial building on Union Street, causing significant damage. The building, known as Union Corner and constructed in 1851, has largely collapsed, leaving only the facade standing on Gordon Street. Network Rail and emergency services are continuing to assess the extent of the damage.

Glasgow City Council has stated that the remaining structure is “seriously compromised.” Raymond Barlow, head of building standards, reported further collapses have occurred since the initial blaze, including the southern gable of the remaining structure. Access to the site is currently limited to emergency services.

Train Service Updates

As of Wednesday, March 11, 2026, low-level train services have resumed at Glasgow Central Station. ScotRail confirmed that all three entrances to the low level (Hope Street and the two on Argyle Street) are open. However, Glasgow Central High Level will remain closed for the rest of the week while structural assessments are carried out.

Ross Moran, route director for Network Rail Scotland, emphasized the priority is to ensure the high-level station is safe before reopening. David Ross, ScotRail chief operating officer, apologized for the disruption and encouraged passengers to check their journey before traveling using the ScotRail app or website.

Ongoing Emergency Response and Road Closures

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service had one appliance remaining on the scene as of 6:00 PM on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. No casualties have been reported.

Police Scotland has reduced some road closures, but several remain in place for public safety:

• Union Street closed between Drury Street and Argyle Street (vehicular and pedestrian)
• Gordon Street closed between Hope Street and West Nile Street (vehicular and pedestrian)
• West Nile Street closed between Gordon Street and St Vincent Street (vehicular only)
• Mitchell Street closed between Gordon Street and NCP Car Park/Mitchell Lane (vehicular only)

Authorities urge the public to avoid the area if possible and plan journeys carefully. Drone pilots have been warned not to fly near the site.

First Minister John Swinney has committed to supporting the rebuild of the area, stating, “We will rebuild, we will restore, and Glasgow will flourish again.”
