Global Coal Demand Reaches Nine Billion Tons Amid Middle East Conflict

Surging natural gas prices triggered by the war in the Middle East are driving a global resurgence in coal consumption, pushing demand toward nearly nine billion tons by 2026, according to the International Energy Agency. rts.ch reported that this shift threatens international climate goals as several countries abandon cleaner energy options to secure cheaper fuel.

Asia Drives New Investments in Coal Infrastructure

The pivot toward cheaper fossil fuels is most pronounced across parts of Asia, affecting nations such as Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Vietnam. India is expanding both its coal imports and domestic mining production to meet rising energy needs. Thierry Bros, a professor at Sciences Po Paris and an energy specialist, told rts.ch that these countries are doing the exact opposite of what is ecologically necessary by burning more cheap coal instead of expensive gas. These infrastructure investments risk locking developing economies into fossil fuel dependence for decades, given that power plants are designed to operate for lengthy spans.

Europe Balances Energy Security and Emissions Targets

European nations have largely curtailed coal consumption through carbon emissions pricing mechanisms that favor renewable energy sources. However, Germany and Poland maintain a heavy reliance on the combustible material to safeguard domestic energy security. As gas prices remain volatile, both European Union members face the prospect of postponing the closure of their remaining coal-fired power plants. In 2025, coal remained the most polluting fossil fuel, accounting for roughly 41 percent of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
