Goalkeeper Hospitalized After Firecracker Incident During German Soccer Match
ESSEN, Germany — A German third-division soccer match between Rot-Weiss Essen and Waldhof Mannheim was temporarily suspended Wednesday after a firecracker thrown from the stands struck Rot-Weiss Essen goalkeeper Felix Wienand, sending him to the hospital. The incident has sparked outrage and prompted calls for increased security measures at soccer games.
Incident Details
During the 53rd minute of the match at the Stadion an der Hafenstraße, a firecracker was thrown from the section of the stands occupied by Waldhof Mannheim fans, exploding near Felix Wienand. The 23-year-old goalkeeper immediately fell to the ground, clutching his ears. Reports indicate he was diagnosed with a suspected acoustic trauma and acute stress reaction.
Referee Lennart Kernchen immediately halted the game and Wienand was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The match was suspended for approximately 40 minutes while officials assessed the situation and consulted with both teams. According to reports, the game was nearly abandoned but eventually resumed despite Wienand’s injury.
Match Outcome and Reactions
Rot-Weiss Essen ultimately won the match 1-0, with Marek Janssen scoring the lone goal in the 31st minute. However, the sporting result was overshadowed by the incident involving Wienand. Waldhof Mannheim also had a player, Terrence Boyd, sent off with a red card in the 63rd minute, leaving them to finish the game with ten men.
Following the match, both clubs condemned the incident. Waldhof Mannheim Sport Director Mathias Schober expressed his regret and stated that the club would investigate and hold those responsible accountable. Schober stated, “Gute Besserung an Felix Wienand… Das gehört nicht zu einem Fußballspiel.” (Get well soon Felix Wienand… This does not belong in a football game.)
Rot-Weiss Essen coach Uwe Koschinat voiced his concern for Wienand’s well-being, stating, “Our thoughts are with Felix. He is really not doing well.” Koschinat added that the incident place Wienand’s health at risk and expressed hope that he would not suffer any long-term damage.
Previous Incidents and Concerns
This incident is not isolated. Just over a year ago, another goalkeeper in a top-division German game was injured by a lighter thrown from the stands, leading to a similar suspension and concerns about fan behavior. This latest event has renewed calls for stricter security measures and harsher penalties for fans who engage in violent or dangerous behavior at soccer matches.
