Godflesh to End Live Performances as Justin Broadrick Recovers from Surgery

Industrial metal pioneers Godflesh will cease live performances immediately following frontman Justin K. Broadrick’s recent surgery for a severe inguinal hernia. Despite ending their live activity, the band plans to release two final studio albums before concluding the project.

Health Complications Force Change

Broadrick underwent significant open abdominal surgery to repair a large hernia that was nearing an emergency situation. As reported by Pitchfork, the operation involved a six-inch incision and has left Broadrick with a weakened abdominal wall. Doctors have advised against the strenuous physical demands of performing Godflesh’s intense live sets, particularly the shouting and screaming vocals, due to the risk of further hernias or catastrophic abdominal damage.

Final Albums in the Works

Godflesh has already completed the recording of their penultimate album, titled Decay, which is currently being mixed and is expected to be released through Relapse Records later this year. According to mxdwn, the band’s final full-length LP was written approximately a year and a half ago and is planned for recording later in 2026. Following the release of this final album, there will be no further Godflesh studio albums or live performances, although occasional dub or live releases may be considered.

Continued Musical Pursuits

Broadrick will continue to create music through other projects, Jesu and JK Flesh, which do not require the same physically demanding performance style. Metal Injection reports that Broadrick too intends to explore a new solo project focused on “heavy/ugly music” featuring guitars, electronics, and vocals, but without the shouted vocal style characteristic of Godflesh.

A Legacy Spanning Decades

Formed in Birmingham, England, in 1988 by Broadrick and B.C. Green, Godflesh has released nine studio albums to date, with two more on the horizon. Their last live performances took place in Europe last year, unknowingly marking the end of an era for the band.
