Google’s Call Recording Feature Now Available in the Czech Republic
Call recording on phones, even for personal use, has historically been a legal gray area. While once readily available, Android previously limited access to microphone permissions for call recording apps, leading users to seek unofficial solutions. Now, Google is gradually rolling out a native call recording feature within the Google Phone app in the Czech Republic.
Availability and Setup
The call recording function is being deployed in waves, so it may not be immediately available to all users. To access the feature, ensure you have the latest version of the Google Phone app, along with the most recent system updates and Google Play system services installed on your device. A phone restart may be required.
How Call Recording Works
During a call, a “Record call” window will appear in the middle of the display. On the first call, tap the “On” button after a three-second countdown to initiate recording. Subsequent calls will display a “Call Support” button, allowing you to select “Call recording.”
Recordings can be accessed through the Phone app settings, within the “Call recording” section. A microphone icon will appear next to recorded calls in your call logs.
Mandatory Recording Notification
A key aspect of the feature is a mandatory notification that informs the other party that the call is being recorded. An automated voice will state, “Call is being recorded” at the beginning of the recording and “Call is no longer recording” when the recording is stopped. This notification cannot be disabled, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
Recording Details and Settings
Recordings are saved in WAV format and can be shared to services like Google Drive or saved directly to your phone’s memory. The audio is initially played through the headphone speaker but can be redirected to the bottom speaker for easier listening.
Within the Phone app settings, you can delete all recordings at once or set up automatic deletion. You can also configure the app to automatically record calls from numbers not saved in your phonebook or from specific contacts.
Device Compatibility
Currently, call recording is available on Pixel devices running Android 14 or later. It is also available on other Android phones running at least Android 9, provided they utilize the Google Phone app. The feature has been reported to be working on the Pixel 9a, but not yet on the Pixel 10 Pro XL, despite both devices being fully updated.
Why Record Calls?
Call recording can be valuable for protecting your rights and preserving important information from lengthy conversations.
Minimum Requirements:
- Pixel 6 and later with Android 14
- Or another phone with at least Android 9
- The latest version of the Google Phone app
While initially available on Pixel devices, the feature is expanding to other Android phones that use the Google Phone app. This rollout will occur over time, providing a convenient and legally compliant way to record calls without relying on third-party applications.
