Google Classroom Gains Native Audio, Video and Screencast Recording Capabilities

Google is expanding the functionality of Google Classroom with the introduction of native audio, video, and screencast recording directly within the platform. This update aims to streamline the creation and sharing of multimodal content, eliminating the need for teachers and students to rely on external tools for these tasks.

Enhanced Multimodal Communication

The new recording feature, available to users in both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, embeds a record button across key areas of Google Classroom. This allows users to easily initiate, record, and post audio, video, or screencasts without leaving the platform. Currently, the functionality is web-only.

Key Recording Locations

The recording feature is integrated into several core Classroom workflows:

• Private comments: Teachers can provide spoken or screen-based feedback on student submissions.
• Announcements and posts: Educators can share audio or video updates with their classes.
• Assignments: Teachers can record instructions for assignments, quizzes, and questions.
• Submissions: Students can respond to assignments using audio, video, or screencasts.

Addressing User Pain Points

Google highlights that this feature addresses common challenges related to typed feedback and limited personalization. Teachers can now provide clearer assignment instructions, offer pronunciation feedback, and walk through technical material line-by-line using screen recordings. Students can similarly benefit from more engaging and accessible ways to submit their work.

A Built-in Alternative to Third-Party Tools

According to Luke Craig, Communities and Programs Lead at Google for Education UKI, the new feature offers an “uncomplicated-to-use replacement for Flipgrid.” Google positions the integration as a way to consolidate creation, feedback, and submission within Classroom, reducing the need for external video response platforms.

Rollout and Access

The feature is rolling out gradually and is currently available to users with a Google Workspace for Education Plus or Teaching and Learning add-on. Students must have permission to post in Classroom to utilize the recording feature for announcements and posts. There is currently no separate admin toggle to control access to the feature.
