Google’s $2.7 Billion Michigan Data Center Deal Signals Recent Era for Clean Energy and Grid Reliability

Google is forging ahead with plans to develop a new data center in Michigan, backed by a significant $2.7 billion investment in clean energy resources. This initiative, announced on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, represents a strategic move to power its growing cloud services and AI operations although bolstering the state’s grid reliability and advancing its clean energy transition.

Partnership with DTE Energy

The project hinges on a partnership with DTE Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider. Google will work with DTE to add 2.7 gigawatts (GW) of new energy resources to the grid, specifically targeting the area surrounding a potential data center location in Van Buren Township, west of Detroit Metropolitan Airport [1]. The proposed data center itself is expected to require 1 GW of power.

A Diverse Clean Energy Mix

The 2.7 GW commitment encompasses a diverse mix of clean energy technologies, including:

  • 1.6 GW of solar power
  • 400 MW of four-hour battery storage
  • 50 MW of long-duration energy storage
  • 300 MW of additional clean resources (potentially including wind, hydroelectric, nuclear, or geothermal)
  • 350 MW from demand response programs

Google’s approach mirrors a similar agreement recently reached with Xcel Energy in Minnesota, suggesting a “bring your own power” strategy where new energy capacity is developed in tandem with new computing facilities [1].

Demand Response and Grid Flexibility

A key component of the plan is the integration of 350 MW of demand response capabilities. This involves incentivizing large electricity consumers, potentially including Google’s own data centers, to temporarily reduce energy consumption during peak grid stress, enhancing grid stability without requiring immediate increases in electricity generation [1].

Clean Transition Tariff and Energy Impact Fund

Google is leveraging its Clean Transition Tariff, a mechanism designed to encourage utilities to incorporate clean energy technologies into their long-term planning. This differs from traditional power purchase agreements, which are often treated as isolated transactions. The company is as well introducing a $10 million Energy Impact Fund to support energy affordability initiatives in Michigan, including home weatherization, energy efficiency technology, and workforce development [1].

Project Cannoli and Site Evaluation

The potential site for the data center is a 280-acre parcel in Van Buren Township, currently dubbed “Project Cannoli.” Google is currently evaluating the site and will provide updates to the community as plans progress [2], [3], [4].
