Gruesome Transformation: A Disturbing Theatrical Makeover

“Gemeindebaugeflüster” Returns to Vienna’s Community Theaters in March 2025

The successful play “Gemeindebaugeflüster” (“Community Whispers”), a collaborative effort between Kulturlabor Gemeindebau and the Herminentheater, will be staged again in March 2025 in Vienna’s 16th and 21st districts. Performances will be held at the SOHO Studios and WienZimmer, with free admission.

Origins of the Play

The production began with workshops held in March 2024, followed by a casting workshop in June. Eleven aspiring actors were selected to form an ensemble, and, with professional guidance from the Herminentheater, they collaboratively wrote an original script. The premiere took place on December 13, 2024.

The Story: A Appear at Vienna’s Social Housing

“Gemeindebaugeflüster” centers around the vision of Jakob Reumann and Hugo Breitner, key figures in the development of Vienna’s social housing program in the 1920s and 30s. Through the lens of the goddess of love, Amore, they observe the realization of their dream – the Viennese Gemeindebau – and the vibrant life within it. The play weaves together humorous stories and glimpses into the lives of residents, featuring scenarios like a stolen dress, a missing girl, a mysterious treasure, and a lingering perfume.

Cast and Crew

The play features a cast of twelve actors: Ambra Berger, Diane Naar-Elphee, Ekaterina Pavlova, Jakob Riegler, Kristof Sziman, Maria Probst, Martin Daubek, Martina Tippel, Raphaela Nistler, Renee Bediz, Siegrid Medosch, and Tobias Brossmann.

The creative team includes:

  • Directors: Julia Vandehof, Thomas Toppler
  • Text: Ensemble, Hannelore Schmid
  • Set & Costume Design: Flo Ölz
  • Dramaturgy & Production Management: Hannelore Schmid
  • Lighting: Goran Peranovic
