Google Home App Gains Expanded Nest x Yale Lock Controls and Gemini Improvements

Google has rolled out a significant update to the Google Home app in early March 2026, introducing expanded controls for the Nest x Yale Lock, fresh automation starters and conditions, and several improvements to Gemini for Home. The updates aim to enhance the smart home experience for users, providing greater control, automation possibilities, and a more responsive voice assistant.

Expanded Nest x Yale Lock Integration

Users of the Nest x Yale Lock will now have access to a wider range of controls directly within the Google Home app. According to Google, the expanded features include the ability to view lock history, receive notifications about lock activity, check battery status, manage passcodes, schedule guest access, and adjust advanced settings. These features, previously in a preview stage, are now being rolled out to users in a gradual release.

New Automation Starters and Conditions

The update also introduces new automation starters and conditions within the Google Home app’s Automation Editor. These additions allow users to create more sophisticated and responsive smart home automations. New triggers include the ability to base automations on whether a security system is armed, if a device is plugged in, or if a device is docked (such as a Pixel Tablet). These features are currently available only within the Automation Editor and are not yet supported in Ask Home or “Help me create” features.

Gemini for Home Improvements

Google is also focusing on improving its Gemini for Home voice assistant, currently in early access. Updates include improved device targeting, allowing for more precise control of smart home devices. For example, a command like “turn off the kitchen” will now intelligently target only the lights in the kitchen, rather than all smart plugs in the room. Gemini will also now explicitly use a user’s home address when providing assistance with location-based queries, such as weather and local news.

Additional Gemini improvements include upgraded answers using more recent Gemini Models, reduced instances of being cut off during speech, improved reliability of triggering automations via voice commands, and improved reliability when playing newly released songs. For Google Home Premium subscribers, “Live Search” functionality has been added to camera streams, allowing users to view the current state of their home.

Nest Wifi Pro Software Update

Alongside the Google Home app update, a software update has been released for the Nest Wifi Pro, focusing on improvements to security, stability, and mesh performance.

Looking Ahead

These updates demonstrate Google’s continued investment in its smart home ecosystem. As Gemini for Home continues to evolve through early access testing, and with ongoing improvements to the Google Home app and its integrations, users can expect a more seamless and intelligent smart home experience. The expanded Nest x Yale Lock controls and new automation features provide greater flexibility and control, while the Gemini enhancements promise a more responsive and helpful voice assistant.
