Google Maps Gets Major AI Upgrade with Gemini Integration

Google Maps is undergoing a significant transformation powered by Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence model. The updates, rolling out now in the U.S. And India, introduce two key features: “Ask Maps,” a conversational AI assistant and “Immersive Navigation,” a revamped 3D navigation experience. These changes represent Google’s “biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade,” aiming to make map exploration more intuitive and helpful for over 2 billion users worldwide.

Introducing ‘Ask Maps’: A Conversational Travel Assistant

“Ask Maps” allows users to interact with Google Maps using natural language, posing complex questions about their surroundings. This feature, accessible via a new tab below the search box, functions similarly to Gemini and can answer detailed travel-related queries. Examples include finding charging stations for dying phones without long waits or locating lit public tennis courts for evening play.

The AI leverages a user’s Google Maps search and save history to provide personalized recommendations. For instance, if a user frequently searches for vegan restaurants, “Ask Maps” will prioritize vegan options in its suggestions. Responses include photos, AI-generated summaries of user reviews, opening hours, and options to save locations or get directions. Users can also share responses with others before making decisions.

Immersive Navigation: A 3D Driving Experience

“Immersive Navigation” delivers a redesigned 3D view of the surrounding environment while driving, displaying buildings, overpasses, and terrain with enhanced detail. This update aims to provide clearer and more intuitive guidance, making navigation feel more like a driving game.

Additional Navigation Improvements

Beyond the core features, Google Maps is also incorporating features to help drivers make informed decisions. The app now displays tradeoffs for alternate routes, such as comparing toll costs to traffic congestion. Users can also expect natural voice guidance, previews of Street View imagery, and assistance with parking.

Availability

The “Ask Maps” feature is currently available in the U.S. And India on both Android and iOS. Immersive Navigation is also launching concurrently.
