Google Messages to Gain Live Location Sharing Feature

Google is reportedly integrating a live location sharing feature directly into its Messages app, a functionality currently housed within Android’s Find Hub. This move aims to streamline communication and enhance safety for users, bringing Google Messages in line with popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp that already offer similar capabilities.

Convenience and Versatility of Live Location Sharing

Live location sharing allows users to share their real-time whereabouts with contacts, offering a convenient way to coordinate meetups or provide reassurance when traveling. The feature can be particularly useful in situations where safety is a concern, allowing trusted contacts to monitor a user’s location. As Android Police reports, the feature allows tracking in the background.

How the Feature Will Work

Based on code discovered in the latest beta version of the Messages app by 9to5Google, the integration appears to mirror the functionality found in Android’s Find Hub. Users will be able to share their location, displayed as an avatar on a map, and simultaneously view the location of others. Unlike a static location share, the live location updates continuously, providing a dynamic view of movement. Users will likely have the option to share their location indefinitely or for a specified duration, with the ability to stop sharing at any time.

Existing Location Sharing Options

Currently, iPhone users have several options for sharing their location, including sharing a one-time snapshot in Messages or Maps, sharing their estimated time of arrival (ETA) in Maps, using Check In in Messages to notify contacts if they don’t reach their destination as expected, or sharing their ongoing Live Location in Find My or Messages. Apple Support details these options, which require iOS 17 or higher for full functionality.

WhatsApp also offers a Live Location feature, allowing users to share their real-time location with individuals or groups. Users control the duration of sharing, enhancing privacy and control. WhatsApp Help Center provides information on how to apply this feature.

Future Implications

The integration of live location sharing into Google Messages represents a logical step towards a more comprehensive and user-friendly messaging experience. By consolidating this feature within a widely used communication app, Google aims to produce it easier for users to stay connected and share their whereabouts seamlessly. The addition of this feature will likely enhance the app’s appeal and competitiveness in the messaging landscape.
