Google Messages to Gain Real-Time Location Sharing Feature

Google is preparing to add a real-time location sharing feature directly within its Messages app for Android users, streamlining the process of sharing whereabouts with contacts. Currently, Android users share their location through apps like Google Maps, Find Hub, Life360, or Snapchat, requiring them to switch between applications. The new feature aims to simplify this process by integrating it directly into the messaging experience.

Simplified Location Sharing

The upcoming feature, discovered in the Google Messages version messages.android_20260220_01_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic, will allow users to share their real-time location directly from within a conversation. Users will access the location sharing option through the attachment menu and select a duration for sharing – one hour, until the conclude of the day, or a custom time. The location sharing will automatically cease after the specified time, eliminating the demand for manual deactivation.

Enhanced Convenience for Dynamic Meetings

This feature is particularly useful when coordinating meetups with friends or family, especially in situations where locations are subject to change. Previously, users could only send static addresses, necessitating manual updates if they moved. The new real-time sharing capability provides a dynamic and accurate way to keep contacts informed of one’s location.

Seamless Integration with Google Maps

While the shared location will be displayed via a link to Google Maps, the entire sharing process will be contained within the Google Messages application, avoiding the need to open separate apps. This integration aims to provide a more fluid and convenient user experience.

Availability

As of February 25, 2026, Google has not announced an official release date for the real-time location sharing feature. Further information regarding the launch is expected from Google in the coming weeks.
