Google Messages to Launch Real-Time Location Sharing Feature

Google is enhancing its Messages application with a highly anticipated real-time location sharing feature, aiming to compete more effectively with messaging platforms like WhatsApp. This addition will move beyond the current functionality of sharing static locations, offering a more dynamic and practical way to connect with friends and family.

Enhanced Functionality for Practical Apply Cases

Currently, Google Messages allows users to share their location, but this only sends a fixed address. The upcoming feature will enable real-time tracking, proving particularly useful for coordinating meetups, monitoring journeys, or ensuring the safety of loved ones. According to Android Authority, the interface for this feature is fully functional in the latest beta version of the application.

How Real-Time Location Sharing Will Work

Sharing your location in real-time will be straightforward. Users will access the feature through the “+” menu within a conversation – the same menu used for attaching photos, GIFs, and files. Selecting “Live Location” will then prompt a window where the duration of sharing can be specified (one hour, all day, or a custom duration). A message will then be sent to the recipient, directing them to the Google “Locate” application or a web page if the app isn’t installed. A banner will appear at the top of the conversation during the sharing period, displaying the remaining time, with an option to stop sharing.

Development Timeline and Previous Efforts

Google has been working on this feature for some time, with initial traces discovered in April 2025. The rollout has taken time, but the company appears to be nearing completion.

Benefits and Applications of Real-Time Location Sharing

Real-time location sharing offers numerous benefits. It can provide peace of mind by allowing parents to monitor their children’s commutes home from school. It’s also valuable for individuals traveling alone at night, enabling them to share their journey with a trusted contact. It can be used to track a friend or family member during activities like solo hiking or biking, providing an added layer of safety.

Google Messages: A Growing Platform

As noted in the Google Play Store, Google Messages is powered by Rich Communication Services (RCS), the industry standard for texting, and is revolutionizing how users connect. Features like high-resolution media sharing, dynamic group chats, and end-to-end encryption are continually being added to enhance the user experience. Google Messages for web also allows users to seamlessly continue conversations across devices.
