Nano Banana is Google’s premier image-generation model, and it powers features across the google ecosystem in apps like Gemini NotebookLM, and recently, Google Messages.With the new Remix feature in Google Messages users can find Nano Banana image editing and generation features right in their conversations. Although the feature is opt-in, Remix in Google Messages is publicly displayed throughout the app, complete with a banana emoji signifying Nano Banana.
After the Remix in Google Messages feature launched in November,it was not received well by android fans,with many criticizing Remix on reddit.By December 2025,Google responded to the criticism in a support post.

Google messages is subtly updating its “Remix” feature,which allows users to create and share custom images from photos in their chat. The update primarily focuses on a visual redesign of the Remix button, replacing the prominent banana emoji with a more streamlined image icon featuring an AI sparkle.
As reported by 9to5Google, the new Remix button is less visually busy than the previous iteration. Previously, the Remix function was indicated by a bright yellow button featuring a small banana. now, the button is smaller and displays a generic image icon with an AI sparkle, suggesting the feature’s AI-powered image editing capabilities. Holding down an image in a conversation still reveals a pill-shaped Remix icon, but it’s also been reduced in size.

The Remix in Messages feature itself continues to function as before, allowing users to apply various effects and customizations to photos before sending them.The change is purely cosmetic, aiming for a cleaner and less distracting user interface.
Though, the update doesn’t address ongoing user concerns about the feature. Many users have expressed a desire for an option to completely disable Remix in Messages, as it can sometimes lead to unintended image alterations. Currently, there is no way to turn off the feature entirely.
