Your texts Are No Longer Private

Microsoft sparked outrage with its Teams update revealing when you’re off the clock.Now, Google is following suit. Forget end-to-end encryption. A new Android update means your RCS and SMS texts aren’t private anymore.

As android Authority reports, Google is archiving your messages on its servers. This applies to both RCS and SMS texts on Pixel phones, initially. Its a significant shift in how your messages are handled.

Here’s what’s happening: Google is now backing up your text messages to Google Drive.This means your message history isn’t solely stored on your device. You can restore these messages when you get a new phone, which sounds convenient. Though, it comes at a cost – your privacy.

Previously, SMS messages were only stored locally on your device or potentially with your carrier. RCS, while more modern, still lacked this kind of global cloud backup. Now,Google has a copy of everything. This opens the door to potential legal requests for your message data, and raises concerns about data security.

You can opt out of this feature. Go to Settings > Messages > backup & Restore and toggle off “Backup to Google Drive.” But many users won’t even realize this is happening, let alone change their settings. The default is to have your texts backed up.

This move aligns with a broader trend. Companies are increasingly prioritizing data collection and accessibility over user privacy. While backups offer convenience, they fundamentally alter the expectation of privacy surrounding personal communications. Consider this a wake-up call: your texts are no longer yours alone.
