Google Translate Enhances Language Learning with New Pronunciation Training Mode

Google continues to refine its apps, adding features to improve usability. While often overlooked until needed, Google Translate is evolving beyond simple translation to become a language learning tool.

Practice Mode for Language Learners

Google Translate now features a “Practice” tab, accessible from the bottom right of the display. This opens a “Personalized conversation practice” feature, offering activities to improve speaking and listening skills. Users can choose from three levels – Basic, Intermediate and Advanced – and tailor the practice to professional conversations, everyday interactions, or communication with friends and family.

New Pronunciation Training Mode

Google Translate is introducing a new pronunciation training mode designed to support users master the nuances of a foreign language. This feature allows users to listen to native speakers and then record their own attempts, receiving a score and personalized recommendations for improvement. The goal is to enable users to speak and listen with the fluency of a native speaker.

How the New Feature Works

The AI-powered “Practice mode” was discovered in version 10.10.37.885563132.3 of the app. When activated, a “Practice” option appears alongside the “Understand” and “Ask” buttons. Tapping the speaker icon labeled “Listen” allows users to hear the correct pronunciation. After attempting to pronounce the phrase, the “Pronounce” button initiates analysis. Google Translate will then provide feedback, and if the recording is unclear, it will display the phrase phonetically. Users are given multiple attempts to improve their pronunciation.

Availability and Cost

This feature, while currently in development, promises to enhance the app’s language-teaching capabilities. As a free app, Google Translate offers a cost-effective way to gain proficiency in a foreign language.
