Google announced on April 22 that its AI-powered Gemini is now embedded in Gmail for millions of users, enabling AI Overviews that synthesize email threads into concise answers directly in search results.
The feature, which debuted at Google Cloud Next ’26, allows users to question natural-language questions and receive instant summaries pulled from across Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Chat without opening individual messages. Google says this helps break through information overload by turning scattered data into actionable insights.
At the same time, Google warned that indirect prompt injection (IPI) represents an evolving threat vector where hidden prompts in emails could manipulate Gemini’s output to influence user behavior — such as tricking someone into clicking malicious links or approving unauthorized transactions.
Google described IPI as an “ultra-dynamic and evolving playground for adversarial attacks” and said it is taking a sophisticated, continuous approach to hardening its models, though it acknowledged the risk cannot be fully solved.
Workspace Intelligence, also unveiled at the conference, adds a semantic layer that connects data across Workspace apps, enabling Gemini to act as an autonomous agent — for example, scheduling meetings or finding budget files through simple commands in Google Chat.
Administrators can now monitor AI agent activity via AI Control Centers, even as new tools like Sheets canvas and Drive Projects let users build flexible dashboards and project hubs using natural language, pulling live data from third-party platforms like Salesforce and HubSpot.
Google Vids received an upgrade with customizable digital avatars supporting 24 languages, allowing teams to produce training or announcement videos quickly without a production crew.
AI Overviews in Gmail will be the default setting for eligible Workspace and Google AI plans when both Gemini for Workspace and Workspace Intelligence are enabled, requiring end users to activate Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
The feature was previously limited to consumers with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions but is now rolling out to business, enterprise, and education customers across tiers including Business Starter, Standard, Plus and Enterprise Starter, Standard, Plus.
Google emphasized that securing Workspace against evolving AI threats remains critical to its mission, even as it pushes deeper integration of generative AI into core productivity tools.
How does Gemini’s integration change the way users interact with Gmail?
Gemini now sits between the user and their email, transforming the search bar into a researcher that synthesizes information across threads and apps to deliver instant answers without manual digging.
What is indirect prompt injection and why is it a concern with Gemini in Gmail?
Indirect prompt injection involves hiding malicious prompts in emails that manipulate Gemini’s behavior to influence user actions — such as prompting clicks or approvals — without the user seeing the harmful instruction directly.
Can administrators monitor how Gemini interacts with company data?
Yes, through AI Control Centers launched alongside Workspace Intelligence, administrators can oversee how AI agents access and utilize organizational data across Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Chat.

Is AI Overviews in Gmail available to all users, or only specific tiers?
It is now available to business, enterprise, and education customers via Workspace plans, previously limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra consumers, and requires enabling Smart features and Workspace Intelligence access.
