Pakistan Government Announces Significant Reduction in Petrol and Diesel Prices

The Pakistani government has implemented a substantial reduction in fuel prices, slashing the cost of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs22 per litre each. This decision, announced on Friday, aims to provide immediate relief to consumers amid fluctuating global oil markets.

Details of the Price Cuts

The reduction follows a previous adjustment of Rs6-7 per litre earlier in the week, which brought the price of HSD to Rs402.78 per litre and petrol to Rs403.78 per litre. With the latest cut, HSD now stands at approximately Rs380 per litre, while petrol is priced at around Rs381 per litre.

The Petroleum Division confirmed that the revised rates will take effect from the week starting May 30. This weekly adjustment aligns with the government’s strategy to respond to global price trends, particularly in the wake of the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has influenced regional fuel markets.

Government Justification and Public Impact

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that the decision reflects Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s commitment to alleviating financial burdens on citizens. A PMO statement emphasized, “Providing relief to the people is my top priority.”

The government has consistently adjusted fuel prices every Friday, a practice maintained even after the pause in the US-Israeli war on Iran. The cuts extend to subsidies for public transport, goods movement, and commuters using motorcycles and rickshaws, highlighting the administration’s focus on vulnerable sectors.
