Greater Sudbury Services Resume, Waste Collection Delayed After Storm

Most municipal services in Greater Sudbury have resumed regular operations following a significant winter storm, though waste and recycling collection and GOVA Transit continue to be impacted. Mayor Paul Lefebvre and city officials are scheduled to provide an update at a press conference this afternoon.

Road Clearing Efforts Continue

The City of Greater Sudbury is prioritizing clearing residential roads to ensure basic access for all households. Crews are currently making initial passes, often resulting in only a single lane being cleared to maximize reach. Efforts are also underway to widen streets hampered by large snowbanks.

Due to deep, compacted snow and icy conditions, the city is utilizing graders and loaders instead of traditional plows, which is extending the time required for snow removal. Resources are being deployed to assist with clearing driveway entrances where possible, but equipment is limited and timelines cannot be guaranteed.

Service Disruptions

As of today, March 19, 2026, the following services remain disrupted:

  • Waste and Recycling Collection: Residential and non-residential roadside waste collection has been suspended until the end of the week. Updated collection dates will be communicated via the City’s Waste Wise app and at www.greatersudbury.ca/wastewise. Residents are advised not to place garbage, recycling, or green cart materials at the roadside until further notice.
  • GOVA Transit: Some routes are operating, potentially with detours. An updated list of operating routes is available at Sudbury.com.

Upcoming Press Conference

Mayor Paul Lefebvre, CAO Shari Lichterman, and representatives from Emergency Services will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. At the Frobisher Depot to provide an update on the city’s storm response. Sudbury.com will report on the press conference later today.
