Nature-Based Interventions: A New Prescription for Health and Well-being

A pioneering project in Siena, Italy, is exploring the therapeutic potential of nature, prescribing time outdoors as a treatment for various health conditions. The initiative, dubbed ‘From prevention to therapeutic support: testing the medical prescription of appropriate Nature-based Interventions (IbN)’, is a collaboration between Legambiente Siena, doctors from Isde, Fiab (Italian Federation of the Environment and Bicycle), non-profit associations, and university researchers.

The ‘Green Prescription’ Approach

The project aims to activate personalized therapeutic interventions – “green prescriptions” – that integrate direct experience in nature. These prescriptions aren’t for medication, but for activities like walking, outdoor exercise, and cycling. The initial pilot project is focused on the valley of the Buongoverno/Mura park, with potential expansion to other parks in the province if successful.

Health Benefits and Biochemical Conditions

Researchers are investigating areas where specific biochemical conditions may be beneficial for treating respiratory diseases or strengthening the immune system. The project highlights that certain “green valleys” may be more conducive to health than urban areas with high levels of exhaust fumes. The goal is to reduce reliance on traditional pharmaceuticals, potentially leading to cost savings for regional and national health services.

Data Collection and Technological Advancement

Beyond the health benefits, the project will generate valuable data for Train spa, a partner in the initiative. This data will be used to develop new geo-referenced databases, which could inform the development of soft mobility services, urban redevelopment projects, and tourist events. Train spa views this as an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability, and innovation.

Sustainability and Collaboration

Train spa has already established a partnership with the Carbon Neutrality Territorial Alliance, demonstrating a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. The company emphasizes the need for concrete scientific solutions to environmental problems, rather than relying on slogans. Strengthening collaboration with the University of Siena and non-profit institutions is also a key priority.

Funding and Support

The project is financed by Train spa and the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS Foundation). The MPS Foundation, historically linked to the governance of Monte dei Paschi di Siena bank, plays a role in supporting initiatives within the region.

Looking Ahead

This project represents a growing trend towards recognizing the importance of nature for both physical and mental well-being. By combining scientific research with practical interventions, the ‘green prescription’ approach offers a promising new avenue for promoting public health and creating more sustainable communities.
