Guangzhou Celebrates Chinese New Year with Diverse Cultural Performances

Guangzhou is hosting over 2,000 cultural and tourism events for the Spring Festival, encompassing signature events, scenic spot activities, artistic performances, and cultural and museum exhibitions. These celebrations aim to provide a festive cultural experience for both residents and visitors, blending traditional heritage with contemporary enjoyment.

Cantonese Opera Takes Center Stage

A key highlight of the celebrations is a series of Cantonese Opera performances. From February 19 to 21, the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theatre will present a Chinese New Year Cantonese Opera at the Hongxiannyu Grand Theater, featuring performances of Lu Bu and Diao Chan, among others . The Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre will also host performances from February 19 to 22 at the Cantonese Opera Art Center, including Meeting on the Magpie Bridge, Tale of the Jade Hairpin and the Black Gauze Cap, Liu Jinding Crashes Four Gates, and Thunderous Battle Drums .

Innovative and Interactive Performances

Beyond traditional opera, Guangzhou is embracing innovative approaches to performance art. Here Comes the Princess, an immersive interactive light Cantonese opera, will be staged at the Quyi Garden at Guangzhou Cultural & Arts Center from February 20 to 22 . This production aims to inject youthful energy into the traditional art form through dialogue across time.

New Productions and Diverse Artistic Offerings

The city will also premiere Sprouting Miracle, an acrobatic fairy tale blending acrobatic skills with dramatic narrative, marking the debut stage production of “Greater Bay Chicken” (Da Wan Ji) at the Guangzhou Opera House from February 20 to 21 . Audiences can also enjoy the Broadway comedy NANTA, the interactive play Traveling with Textbooks, and the musical Time Agent, offering a diverse range of artistic experiences.

The Story of Lü Bu and Diaochan

The opera Lu Bu and Diaochan is based on a famous story from the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Diaochan, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, played a pivotal role in a scheme by Wang Yun to incite Lü Bu to betray and kill the warlord Dong Zhuo . The tale has been frequently adapted into various art forms, including plays and video games , , .
