South Korean Lawmakers Face Scrutiny Over Ethics and Allegations of Corruption
Recent cases involving South Korean lawmakers have brought issues of ethical conduct and alleged corruption to the forefront, prompting investigations and raising concerns about accountability within the political system. Several incidents, ranging from alleged bribery to questionable financial dealings, are currently under scrutiny.
Daejang-dong Development Scandal and Kwak Sangdo
Former People Power Party lawmaker Kwak Sangdo and his son are facing legal repercussions related to the Daejang-dong development preferential treatment scandal. Prosecutors have sought a three-year prison sentence for Kwak and a nine-year sentence for his son, alleging they received 5 billion won (approximately $3.7 million USD as of March 4, 2026) from a private developer. The actual amount received was approximately 2.5 billion won ($1.85 million USD). Asia Economy reports the verdict is scheduled for January 30th.
Acquittal and Subsequent Investigation of Kwak Sang-do
Despite an initial acquittal on bribery allegations in February 2025, Kwak Sang-do remained under investigation concerning funds received for his son’s retirement allowance and earnings. Daily Weby details that the court found insufficient evidence to support bribery claims related to a 50 million won payment received in March 2016.
Baekhydon Bribery Case and Lawyer Kwak Jung-ki
In a separate case, lawyer Kwak Jung-ki, a former police superintendent, was sentenced to a suspended prison term for accepting bribes related to the Baekhyun-dong development corruption case. The Seoul Daily reports that the Seoul High Court sentenced Kwak to two years and six months in prison, suspended for four years, and ordered him to forfeit 50 million won after he was found to have received the funds from the chairman of Asia Developer.
Broader Concerns Regarding Ethical Conduct
These cases are part of a larger pattern of ethical concerns surrounding South Korean lawmakers. Allegations have included violence against colleagues, theft, and misuse of public funds. The incidents highlight the need for stronger oversight and enforcement of ethical standards within the political system.
